SUMMARY:- Steelheart may be dead, but Epics still plague Newcago, and David and the Reckoners have vowed to fight back.
To be honest, at first I
just skipped this book and jumped to the next one in the series, ‘Firefight’,
then the characters kept referencing Mitosis in ‘firefight’ so I finally picked
it up. It's an alright story, a short story intended to be a filler in between
first and the second book, so don’t expect some dramatic twist happening in
this book that abruptly changes the whole course of the series, that being said
there are many interesting parts in the story, things happen that in the future
may bring David a little closer to understanding the origin of epic powers and
weaknesses, we get a glimpse into the life in Newcago, post-Steelheart, now
that he and his minion epics have been defeated, how is the city and its people
subjugated for a decade are coping with the new reality? A new Newcago, free of Steelheart and the perpetual darkness coating the skies, brought upon by 'Nightweilder'.
So in this book, our heroes encounter an Epic named, you guessed it, Mitosis. Mitosis comes to claim Newcago and kill the 'Steelslayer', that's what the people call David now, the Steelslayer, I found that to be a cool pseudonym. So as the name suggests, Mitosis can make multiple copies of himself, during the fight, with his life hanging by a thread, David gets some insight into how the epic weaknesses may manifest, but this being a short story you can expect it all to actually unfold in 'Firefight'.
All being said and done, it’s a
fairly short story intended to be a filler in between Steelheart and Firefight
but I’d suggest reading it before getting to the second book as this book is
referenced several times in Firefight.
CHARACTERS:-
1. FIREFIGHT
2. MEGAN
The images of other characters flickered in my mind throughout the book but for the character of Megan, I had a constant one.
